Triage Exercise Open To All!!
  Triage Exercise in Monroe

 NOTE: The exercise scheduled for November 5th has been canceled; another exercise is being planned for Sunday, November 20.  If you've already registered, you will be receiving information on this change.  Registrations are still being accepted.

  -An Exercise in Triage will be conducted on Sunday, November 20  at the Monroe Township Fire Station, 15331 S. Dixie Hwy, Monroe, MI.  You must be either CERT trained or MRC trained to take an active part in this exercise.  If you are not CERT or MRC trained we can still use you as a volunteer to play a victim - you do not need any prior training to participate as a victim only.  Registrations for this exercise are still being accepted

The C.E.R.T. course is taught in the community by a trained team of qualified instructors who have completed the C.E.R.T. Train-the-Trainer course conducted by their state training office for emergency management.  C.E.R.T team members are required to complete 20 hours of training to be certified.  Once trained, mandatory refresher training is required for a minimum of twice a year.  This is necessary to maintain an individuals C.E.R.T. status.


What Does the Course Involve?
A typical C.E.R.T. course consists of 20 hours of training, usually conducted one night a week over typically about 5 weeks. Classes sometimes include trained emergency personnel, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics and Emergency Management professionals to help suppliment training.
The course agenda is as follows:

Session 1- DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Introduction to disasters, impact of disasters on infrastructures, hazards posed by buildings and nonstructural items, the role of C.E.R.T. in disaster response.

Session 2 DISASTER FIRE SUPPRESSION
Identifying and reducing potential fire hazards, basic fire suppression strategy, firefighting resources, firefighting techniques.

Session 3 DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS 
PART 1 Treatment strategies for life threatening conditions and principles of triage.

Session 4 DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS
PART 2 Head to toe assessments, treatment for head wounds, treatment for fractures, sprains, burns and other injuries.

Session 5 LIGHT SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS
Search and rescue priorities and resources, techniques for size up and search, lifting, cribbing and removing victims, rescuer safety.

Session 6 DISASTER PSYCHOLOGY AND TEAM ORGANIZATION
The post-disaster emotional environment, the Incident Command System, C.E.R.T. Strategies, tactics, and documentation.

Session 7 COURSE REVIEW AND DISASTER SIMULATION EXERCISE
Additional and refresher training will be provided and is a condition of continued (C.E.R.T.) Team membership.

    • Ability to describe the types of hazards that are most likely to affect homes and communities.
  • Fire Safety
    • Identify and reduce potential fire hazards in their home or workplace.
    • While working as a team, apply basic fire suppression strategies, resources, and safety measures to extinguish a burning liquid.
  • Disaster Medical Operations
    • Triage and treating life threatening injuries Assessment, Treatment, and Hygiene
    • Select and set up a treatment area.
  • Light Search and Rescue
    • Identify planning and size up requirements for potential search and rescue situations.
    • Use safe techniques for debris removal and victim extrication.
    • Describe ways to protect rescuers during search and rescue.
  • Team Organization
    • Describe the function of C.E.R.T. and their role in immediate response.
  • Terrorism Assessment
    • Describe the most common techniques for searching a structure.
  • Assist emergency responders
    • Apply techniques for opening airways, controlling bleeding and treating for shock.
    • Perform head to toe assessments.
    • Employ basic treatments for various wounds, and apply splints to suspected fractures and sprains.
